{"id":121,"date":"2026-05-29T20:55:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T20:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/burntbutter.ca\/?p=121"},"modified":"2026-06-16T20:03:58","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T20:03:58","slug":"the-thanksgiving-we-served-bread-pudding-as-stuffing-all-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/burntbutter.ca\/?p=121","title":{"rendered":"The Thanksgiving We Served Bread Pudding as Stuffing All Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Thanksgiving We Served Bread Pudding as Stuffing All Day<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People think restaurant kitchens are these perfectly organized machines run by calm geniuses with tweezers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes an entire caf\u00e9 serves sweet bread pudding covered in gravy for Thanksgiving dinner all goddamn day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I worked in a caf\u00e9 where we did huge holiday prep ahead of time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>turkey<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>mashed potatoes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>gravy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>vegetables<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stuffing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Containers everywhere. Fridges packed. Everybody exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And on Thanksgiving Day itself, somebody called in sick, so I got dragged in even though my life was already a complete disaster at the time. My car had been broken into. I was stressed out of my mind. Everybody working food service knows those shifts where your soul already left your body before you even clocked in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I\u2019m serving dinners all day and customers keep saying:<br>\u201cThe stuffing is SO good.\u201d<br>\u201cI love how sweet it is.\u201d<br>\u201cThis is amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I remember thinking:<br>Sweet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Thanksgiving service is war. You don\u2019t stop moving long enough to investigate weird compliments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then near the end of the shift, the chef finally realizes what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We had been serving actual sweet bread pudding instead of stuffing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With gravy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To hundreds of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And honestly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People loved it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which tells you something important about food:<br>Most people don\u2019t care about authenticity nearly as much as they care about comfort, salt, fat, texture, and whether something tastes good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Food people love to pretend there are sacred rules for everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile exhausted kitchen staff are accidentally inventing dessert stuffing hybrids and customers are practically licking the plates clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s restaurant life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the polished TV version.<br>The real version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Thanksgiving We Served Bread Pudding as Stuffing All Day People think restaurant kitchens are these perfectly organized machines run by calm geniuses with tweezers.
