{"id":127,"date":"2026-05-29T20:59:51","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T20:59:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/burntbutter.ca\/?p=127"},"modified":"2026-06-16T19:35:26","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T19:35:26","slug":"your-oven-is-lying-to-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/burntbutter.ca\/?p=127","title":{"rendered":"Your Oven Is Lying to You"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Oven Is Lying to You<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the biggest scams in home cooking is that little beep your oven makes when it says it\u2019s preheated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No it isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your oven hits the target temperature for about four seconds, screams \u201cGOOD ENOUGH,\u201d and then tricks people into ruining dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Always let a home oven go at least one more full heating cycle after it beeps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>baking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>roasting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pizza<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>anything where browning matters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>anything expensive you don\u2019t want to wreck<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because most home ovens heat unevenly and cycle like confused raccoons smashing buttons in the dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s what happens:<br>The sensor reaches temperature near one spot in the oven, usually close to the heating element.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The oven beeps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile the actual walls, racks, air, trays, and overall oven environment are still catching up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So people throw food in too early and then wonder:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>why nothing browns properly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>why roasted vegetables steam instead of roast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>why cookies spread weird<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>why pizza crust sucks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>why everything cooks unevenly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Restaurants know this already because professional ovens recover heat faster and stay more stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Home ovens?<br>Home ovens are emotionally unstable little liars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That extra cycle matters because it allows the entire oven to fully saturate with heat instead of just technically touching the target temperature for one brief glorious moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if you really want better cooking:<br>get an oven thermometer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the number on the dial means absolutely nothing in some houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve worked with ovens running:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>25 degrees hot<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>50 degrees cold<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>one side hotter than the other<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and one demon machine that somehow burned the bottom while leaving the top pale like Victorian tuberculosis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People blame themselves constantly for bad cooking when honestly sometimes the appliance is just drunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And once you understand that, your food suddenly gets way better with almost no extra effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which is basically half of cooking:<br>learning which lies to stop believing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Your Oven Is Lying to You One of the biggest scams in home cooking is that little beep your oven makes when it says it\u2019s preheated.
